Pearsall man dies in crash near Gillett

GILLETT -- Baltasar Pasqueda, 33, of Pearsall is dead and five others are being treated at area hospitals following a crash at 6:40 a.m. on S.H. 119 near here, according to Trooper Jason Reyes of the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol.

Details are sketchy at this time, but Reyes said that Pasqueda was a front-seat passenger in a pickup truck being driven southbound on S.H. 119 by 19-year-old Oscar Martinez. Three other men were riding in the truck’s back seat.

For reasons yet unknown, the pickup truck crossed the centerline of the roadway into the path of a northbound tractor-trailer being driven by 45-year-old Gilbert Garcia. Reyes said Garcia attempted to take evasive action, but the two vehicles collided.

Pasqueda was pronounced dead at the scene, Reyes, said. Martinez was transported via ambulance to the Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital in Kenedy, but was transferred from that facility in stable condition, said a hospital spokesman. Garcia was transported to the Connally Memorial Medical Center in Floresville, where spokesman Nancy Preyor-Johnson said he was treated and released.

The remaining three passengers in the pickup truck were flown via AirLife helicopter to University Hospital in San Antonio. No further information was available.
