1933-2012

Louis Benedict Kopecki Sr., 80, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away in his home Sunday, June 2, 2013, surrounded by his family. He was born Jan. 30, 1933, in Kosciusko to Otylia (Skrobarczyk) and Joseph F. Kopecki Sr. He was a former resident of Stockdale and a resident of San Antonio for 54 years, and he was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in San Antonio.

Louis served during the Korean War in the U.S. Army at Misawa Air Force Base in Japan from 1953-55 as a heavy artillery mechanic, earning the rank of corporal. He married Mary Louise (Dugie) July 4, 1957, in Kosciusko. He loved to build and fix things, whether it required a hammer, wrench, or saw, from a young boy living on the farm, learning at the hand of his father, to making his living and providing for his family. He was well-known for his work as a hydraulic mechanic and fabricator in the utility industry in Central and South Texas. He had a passion for Bluegrass music. He played the guitar, fiddle, banjo, and mandolin.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Mary Louise Kopecki, on Nov. 27, 2012; his parents; and infant sister Eva Kopecki.

He is survived by his daughters, Josephine Sheldon and husband James, Linda Nichols and husband Lucky, and Peggy Kopecki, all of San Antonio; his son, Louis B. Kopecki Jr. and wife Kathy of San Antonio; his siblings, Josephine Kopecki of Floresville, Henry Kopecki and wife Lucille of Stockdale, Lillian Kotzur of Kirby, Dorothy Pilarczyk and husband Raymond of Falls City, Joseph Kopecki Jr. and wife Sharon of Nixon, Agnes Ramos of Falls City, Alice Kopecki of Hutto, and Adrian Kopecki and wife Phyllis of Stockdale; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Visitation was held Sunday, June 9, from 6-8 p.m. in St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in San Antonio, with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. A private family time was set for 5:30 p.m.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in the church with the Rev. Eddie Bernal officiating.

Interment followed at 11:45 a.m. in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Care Centers of South Texas Foundation Inc., 100 N.E. Loop 410, Ste. 600, San Antonio, TX 78216.
