Immanuel Lutheran Church is now hiring for a Youth and Family Ministry Director. Pastoral: Minister to youth and their families during Sunday School and other church programs, being present in their lives outside the church walls, available for common concerns and in crisis situations. Leadership: Recruit and nurture Youth and Family Ministry program. Administration : Manage the planning process and coordinate with Pastor and Youth Committee all regular ministries to youth and their families. This includes youth of all ages on Sunday mornings and mid-week events; assisting with Confirmation, special events, trips and retreats, and parent meetings. Stewardship: Ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of youth programs, manage youth ministry budget, and collaborate with the sponsors of each Youth group. Ability to build, lead, and empower youth. Ability to implement a ministry vision. Familiarity with Lutheran Doctrine required; must be comfortable teaching it and representing Lutheran Theology. Proficient computer skills using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database, email, internet, and social media. Supervisory experience preferred. Ability to adapt and evaluate curriculum preferred. Must have excellent organization, communication (verbal and written), and listening skills, with a high degree of initiative and accountability. Exceptional interpersonal and relational skills required, with sensitivity to church members and visitors. Understanding and enjoyment of youth and families and guiding their spiritual development. Horace Burgess Smith, 67, of Floresville, Texas, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, in the home of his mother, Verna Hood, in Floresville. He was born June 9, 1945, in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., to Fred Levi Smith Jr. and Verna Irene Van Pelt.

Horace was self-employed and a member of the Church of Christ. He married Karen Moore of Klamath Falls, Ore., and they were the parents of four daughters. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force. After serving his country, he and his family moved to Sitka, Alaska.

He was preceded in death by his father; two brothers, Fred W. Smith and James Hagan Smith; stepfather Bill Hood; and his grandparents, Fred Levi Smith Sr. and Jimmie Louise Hagan and Frank Van Pelt and Nancy Ellen Gist.

Horace is survived by his four daughters, Verna Fern Peterson and husband Loren of Sitka, Alaska; Kristine Jorgensen and husband Loren of Anchorage, Alaska; and Gerri Butner and husband Allen, and Jeanny Wharton and husband Mark, all of Juneau, Alaska; 10 grandchildren, Dwayne Smith, Kevin Peterson, Margaret Peterson, Loren Peterson, Brad Butner, Tera Butner, Mariah Butner, Ryan Wharton, Eli Wharton and Samuel Wharton; three great- grandchildren, Jayce Smith, Kamia Smith, and Liam Smith; his mother, Verna Van Pelt Smith Hood; sisters Nancy Carnes and husband Tom of McCoy, Barbara Leonhardt of Floresville, Alice Navarro of Pontotoc, Miss., and Tina and Jeff Sutpkin of New Albany, Miss.; brother Charles Smith of Floresville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate his life was held on Sunday, June 9, at 1 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville, officiated by Elder Gordon Lindley of the Church of Christ.

Interment followed in the Floresville City Cemetery in Floresville.
