Q: Along with crab fishing, “Deadliest Catch” is about relationships, mostly father-son and brother-brother. That includes you and your older brother, Capt. Sig Hansen, of the F/V Northwestern. What’s that dynamic?

A: He’s the older brother, and he’ll always be the older brother. So it goes back to our family. There was no hugging, no “I love yous” and “goodbyes,” all that crap. Everything was based on respect. We respected our father, what he did for a living.

Q: This season, you got the chance to leave the deck and come up to the wheelhouse to be captain for blue crab season. Might we see the Northwestern go to a tag-team captain model, like brothers Andy and Johnathan Hillstrand on the F/V Time Bandit?

A: Yeah, well, those guys get along, and they can handle each other in the wheelhouse. We tried that, and there were a bunch of awkward silences, and we didn’t like that.

Q: What are family holidays like for your Norwegian-American family?

A: We get together a couple of times a year, Christmas is one of them. We also have our Norwegian independence day here in Seattle, which we do a parade, and everybody gets dressed up in the Norwegian costumes. But it’s me and Sig, our mom and our kids, sitting around twiddling our thumbs, wondering when we’re going to eat, and can we go?

Q: What would you like for your kids?

A: First get an education, then go fishing. For us, it was the other way around. Fishing, that was our education.
