The 69th annual Stockdale Watermelon Jubilee is set for Thursday through Saturday, June 13-15, in Stockdale. The Stockdale Chamber of Commerce has been busy making preparations.
The weekend kicks off Thursday with turn-in and judging for the Watermelon Growing Contest from 4-8 p.m. at 1009 West Jackson St. in Stockdale.
Also on Thursday will be the third installment of professional wrestling at the Jubilee -- Watermelon Rumble III. Bell time is 7 p.m. in the Stockdale City Park. Admission is $5.
“The Hillbilly Jug Band” will perform from 9 p.m. to midnight at the main pavilion.
Friday’s festivities will begin with the crowning of Miss Rodeo Stockdale 2013 and her court during the Lester Meier Rodeo Company pre-show at 7 p.m.
Pre-sale tickets for the rodeo and concert are $15 per night, rodeo only and senior citizen $10 per night, and are available at Country Girl, Band Electric, Brahma Bull Pen, the Texas Cooler, and Maham Corp., all in Stockdale.
Tickets are $20 per person per night if you purchase at the gate. Children 10 and younger get in free throughout the weekend.
The rodeo pre-show includes the crowning of Laken Snyder as Miss Rodeo Stockdale and Sydney Dockery as Stockdale Rodeo Princess. Careum Lambeck and Brayden Dillingham will be crowned Little Miss and Little Mr. Rodeo, respectively.
The first of two rodeos by producer Lester Meier Rodeo Co. will begin at 7:30 p.m., including a calf scramble and the ever-popular mutton bustin’.
The winner of the Watermelon Growing Contest will be announced during the rodeo halftime.
“Turnpike Troubadours” will open up on Friday night for Stoney LaRue at 8:30 p.m. at the main pavilion.
Saturday will be an early morning with day-of-race registration and T-shirt pick-up for the Watermelon Crawl 5K and Kids Crawl Fun Run beginning at 6:45 a.m. at 1009 West Jackson St. in Stockdale. Shuttle service to the starting point of the Watermelon Crawl 5K race will begin from that location at approximately 7:15 a.m. The Watermelon Crawl 5K race will begin at 8 a.m. near Jackson Nature Park on C.R. 401. The Kids Crawl Fun Run will begin at 9 a.m. at 1009 West Jackson St. The deadline for early registration for this year’s Watermelon Crawl 5K Run/Walk and Kids Crawl is 3 p.m. Friday. Registration forms are available at www.stockdaletx.org or at the Brahma Bull Pen in Stockdale. Early registration is also available online at www.athleteguild.com.
The annual Watermelon Jubilee Parade is Saturday at 10:30 a.m., featuring grand marshal Dottsy Brodt Dwyer, better known as “Dottsy.” In 1975, her first single, “Storms Never Last,” became a Top 20 U.S. country chart hit, which was followed by “I’ll Be Your San Antone Rose.” Her last chart entry was in 1981, when Dottsy began working with autistic and mentally retarded children.
Queen Melone Emily Ploch and her court will make their first parade appearance.
Following the parade, the City Park will be full of family fun with activities for all ages, including kiddie games and attractions, live music, food and craft vendors, horseshoe and washer tournaments, and more. Admission into the park for Saturday afternoon is free.
Entertainers include Sierra Cecil and Elvis Presley and the “Junction 541 Band.” Watermelon will be abundant with the watermelon-eating contest, the Jubilee dog races, a Jubilee dog show, and the Watermelon Olympics.
The 69th annual Watermelon Jubilee will conclude Saturday night with the final installment of the Lester Meier Rodeo Company performance and concerts by Jason Eady and co-headliners Cody Canada & “The Departed” and “Reckless Kelly.”
The purchase of a personal Chamber of Commerce membership will provide free parking for the duration of Jubilee weekend on the Jubilee grounds.
