Hello La Vernia Citizens,

I want to take the opportunity in this month’s article to highlight the accomplishments and the contributions of R.W. “Bobby” Richter. It has been, as I write this article, 48 days since Bobby’s passing, and I can honestly say, there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about Bobby or the thumbprints he has left around this city.

Soon after my wife Robyn convinced me to move to La Vernia, which wasn’t hard, we would go out to eat at any of the local restaurants and there would always be this man in a black cowboy hat that seemed to know everyone! He always had a smile on his face and was always so cordial to anyone that came his way. Fast forward 15 plus years, and I found myself sitting in the same council chambers with Bobby, sharing a common goal to serve our citizens and make our city a desirable place to live and raise a family.

I will say as I really got to know Bobby, I had no idea how frugal the man was, which means he could really pinch a penny! And this was good, and I really mean this, because Bobby saved La Vernia citizens literally thousands of dollars over the years during his involvement with the city. He had a knack, or what I would say was a “calling” for the position of city councilman and we owe not only Bobby, but his wife, Shirley and their children a debt of gratitude. His family dealt with the many years of meetings and time spent worrying about a water leak or serving on a committee that benefited our citizens.

At this month’s June council meeting, we’ll be closing a chapter at City Hall and I will personally miss my hours of conversations with Bobby. I just thought it was important to let folks know how good this man was to give so much of his time, and to let his family know that we thank them for sharing Bobby with us!

Robert Gregory is mayor of La Vernia.
