Roberto A. Guzman has received the honor of valedictorian for the La Vernia High School class of 2013. Roberto is the son of Roberto and Monica Guzman, brother of Monica and Ricardo, and grandson of Alfonso and Estela Hernandez, and Martha Orozco.

Roberto was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, but his family moved to Texas soon after he was born. He began attending school in the La Vernia Independent School District as a seventh-grader.

Throughout high school, he participated in several school organizations and activities. He was a four-year track and field participant, qualifying for Regionals his junior and senior years in the distances. Roberto was also on the cross-country team for three years and qualified for State his sophomore and senior years. He competed on the Math and Science UIL teams his senior year, and qualified for the Regional meet in both events. Roberto was an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes his junior and senior years, and was elected vice president his senior year. He was also a member of the St. Ann’s Catholic Church of La Vernia Teen Ministry his junior and senior years.

Roberto will attend Rice University in the fall in hopes of pursuing a degree in cognitive sciences. He has been awarded the Rice Trustee Scholarship in the amount of $84,000 and the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation Scholarship for $12,000. He is excited to be among the first generation in his family to attend college in the United States and is especially excited to see the plans God has in store for his future as a Rice Owl.
