Nixon-Smiley’s class of 2013 salutatorian is Kelby Jo Henderson, the daughter of Sam Henderson and Jo Lyn Henderson. Kelby, 18, is the granddaughter of John L. Cook, Nancy Jo Cook, and Ann Gary.

Born and raised on a ranch, Kelby would rather be outdoors and with animals. She loves to ride horses, hog hunt with dogs on horseback, work cattle for her grandpa, and hang out with her friends.

Athletically, Kelby has played basketball and volleyball, and received two awards -- an academic award and second-team award.

Kelby has been accepted to Tarleton State University, where she will study pre-vet with hopes of eventually entering Texas A&M’s Veterinary School in College Station to become a horse veterinarian. She hopes to eventually own her own equine veterinary hospital.
