Karnes City High School class of 2013 salutatorian is Hailey Johnson, daughter of Terry and Melanie Johnson.

Hailey’s activities include being a member of the Karnes City Highsteppers, where she was on the spirit committee for two years, one year as a lieutenant, and her last year as captain. She was president of Student Council, FFA, and NHS as well as GAA vice president, FCA reporter, and class vice president. Two summers ago Hailey traveled to England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales as a People to People Student Ambassador. She has shown commercial steers for 10 years, and was grand champion the past two years. Outside of academics, Hailey was a member of the cross- country team for four years, track for two years, and golf for three years; she went to regionals every year in golf.

One of the moments she’ll remember most is when John Garcia kicked a field goal to win the game against Poth, and they won for the first time in a while. She will also remember getting the opportunity to perform at halftime during the Alamo Bowl with the Karnes City Highsteppers.

Hailey’s advice for upcoming freshmen or anyone worried about rankings is to devote time to schoolwork but also leave time to have a social life.

She attributes her success to her parents, who have instilled in her a good work ethic and to always do her best. Hailey’s parents, brother Rhett, and friends have been a great support system throughout high school.

Upon graduation, she plans on attending Texas A&M University in College Station and major in history. She chose history because it will allow her to go into two fields, either law school or getting a master’s to become a librarian.
