Re: County holds first FY ’14 budget workshop, June 12

To county commissioners/county auditor: You obviously have not done your homework, when it comes to creating an IT department. You plan on expanding your IT footprint, and believe it will still only cost $100,000 for equipment annually, and you plan to hire two individuals to handle the entire load at $25,000 each!

Let me shed some light. The average salary for a system administrator is $62,000 a year in San Antonio. The average salary for a network administrator in San Antonio is $57,000 a year. The average salary for a server administrator is $71,000 a year in San Antonio. IT security is looking at about $61,000 a year in San Antonio. (You can pull this information off of indeed.com or any other average salary website).

So let’s think about this. You want to hire two people that do it all for $25,000 a year each at an expected 40 hours a week, you want your IT services to run uninterrupted or with minimal downtime, you want desktop support (for how many end users and how many buildings?), you want your information to be protected, and you want your network to be fast?

What sane person with all of those qualifications would work for you? No one with those qualifications will work for you. Do you not expect to pay them overtime for after-hours system maintenance, or other unforeseen outages? Not to mention, who will manage them?

So you’ll get two people who are unqualified, who will be ineffective, and cannot provide the support you desire, all while creating a headache and backlog on the work the county employees already do. This doesn’t even begin to touch the surface of running an IT department or even implementing your grand idea of connecting all the county buildings with fiber runs.

I highly suggest you get a clear picture of the services you require, and provide the requirements to multiple qualified IT companies, who in turn can provide you a more accurate price range for what you are requesting.

The price range you have given to the public is deceptive, and it is clear you are not capable of hiring and managing your own IT department.

retiredinlavernia You are so right! This was my reasoning for requesting them to look into an IT consulting company for proposals. It would have gave them multiple options and competitive pricing.

Your numbers make alot of sense given two full time IT experts but I have to wonder why they are required. Once a computer system is set up it does not take full time care. I have worked at firms with 25 or more computers linked ... More ›
