1928-2013

Verna Louise Jobe Cordes, a longtime resident of Floresville, Texas, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2013, at 10:04 p.m. in the Life Care Hospital in San Antonio at the age of 85 years, 5 months, and 21 days. Verna was born Jan. 30, 1928, in Tipton, Okla., the daughter of Fred and Daisy Florence Adair Jobe.

As a youngster, Verna helped in her dad’s cafe, often serving coffee to Lyndon Baines Johnson. Soon after graduating from Port Neches High School, Verna married Oney Charles Cordes on Nov. 19, 1949. Oney, Verna’s beloved husband of more than 52 years, preceded her in death on Feb. 26, 2002. Verna was a professional seamstress/designer of gowns for the Order of the Alamo Fiesta, the Lutheran Coronation, the Floresville Peanut Festival, and the Stockdale Watermelon Thump. She also designed and made costumes for the Magic Time Machine, Fiesta Texas, and numerous personalities such as Bob Hope, Don Knotts, Tanya Tucker, and Doug Stone, in addition to making several magnificent wedding dresses over the years. She was also involved as a 4-H leader for more than 50 years in clothing, foods, and entomology, where she received the 4-H Alumni Award, the Salute to Excellence Award, and the Wilson County Friend of 4-H Award, in addition to being a 50-plus-year member of the Labatt Extension Education. Verna loved her bunco club, and was a member of the Floresville Lutheran Church.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oney Charles Cordes; her son, John Charles Cordes; and her sister, Ruthie Robertson.

She is survived by her children, Richard Allen Cordes and wife Janis of Menard, Oney Rodger Cordes and wife Melody of Mertzon, and Gregory Lewis Cordes and wife Rosa, Laurie Cordes Curtis and husband Danny, Wanda Cordes Baldwin and husband Bill, and Donna Cordes Shodrock and husband Stephen, all of Floresville; her 17 grandchildren, Megan, Blane, and Logan Cordes, Amber and Kyle Cordes, Lacey, Cody, and Tiffany Farris, Casey, Calley, and Cade Cordes, Billy and Kelsey Baldwin, Colby and Shae Shodrock, and Jaimee Curtis Sisson and Jody Curtis; her 12 great-grandchildren, Avery, Cam, Alli, Barrett, Makayla, Emma, Elise, Gus, River, Chesney, Brody, Dansley, and one more on the way; her sisters, Shirley Basham of San Antonio and Freddie Gaubatz of Harlingen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, June 12, at 5 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.

A funeral service was held on Thursday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, officiated by the Rev. Tim Muehlbard.

Interment followed in the Floresville City Cemetery in Floresville.
