Field Appraiser. The Wilson Central Appraisal District is currently accepting applications for the position of Field Appraiser. Responsibilities include office and field work associated with the appraisal of residential property. Applicants must have a high school education or equivalent and have TDLR certification or be willing to complete requirements to obtain such certification.  Applicants must also possess good computer and people skills; have reliable transportation, and a valid Texas Driver License. Verna Van Pelt Smith Hood, a resident of Floresville since 1995, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2013, at noon in her residence in Wilson County, Texas, at the age of 88 years, 4 months, and 5 days. Verna was born Feb. 10, 1925, in Lawrence County, Tenn., the daughter of Frank and Nancy Gist Van Pelt.

After graduation from Lawrence County, Tenn., schools, Verna was a homemaker. She married Fred Levi Smith Jr. on Sept. 21, 1941. Fred preceded Verna in death in 1975. Verna married Billy James Hood on June 3, 1978. Billy preceded Verna in death on March 17, 2013. Verna was a faithful member of the Floresville Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Fred Levi Smith Jr. and Billy James Hood; her sons, Fred W. Smith, James Hagan Smith, and Horace Burgess Smith; her stepsons, James Michael Hood and David Leon Hood; her sisters, Louise Owens, Ada Murdock, and Geneva Bishop; and her brothers, Alvin Van Pelt, Elmer Van Pelt, and Carnel Van Pelt.

Verna is survived by her daughters, Nancy Carnes and husband Tom of McCoy, Barbara Leonhardt of Floresville, Alice Navarro of Pontotoc, Miss., and Tina Sutphin and husband Jeff of New Albany, Miss.; her son, Charles Smith of Floresville; and her stepdaughter, Rhonda Hood McConnell of Riverside, Calif.

Visitation was held on Thursday, June 20, from 6-8 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.A funeral service was held on Friday at 10 a.m. in the Floresville Church of Christ, officiated by Elder Gordon Lindley.

Interment followed in the Floresville City Cemetery in Floresville.

Serving as pallbearers were Adam Leonhardt, Joseph Leonhardt, Michael Carnes, Brandon Harding, Tom Carnes III, Charlie Smith, and Robbie Smith.
