Eagle Ford: Council increases late payment fees
La Vernia Mayor Robert Gregory (left) administers the oath of office to former Councilman Eloi Cormier during the June 18 special La Vernia City Council meeting. Cormier, who lost his bid for re-election to the council in May, will fill the remaining term of longtime Councilman Bobby Richter, who passed away earlier this year.

LA VERNIA -- The La Vernia City Council will raise the cost of water reconnection fees for those who fail to make payments.
During the special meeting held June 18, council members Randy Leonard, Marie Gerlich, Jennifer Moczygemba, Eloi Cormier, and John Richter voted to increase the cost for water reconnection fees for commercial property and residential rental property from $25 to $50, or $75 if the reconnection is after hours.
“$25 is just a slap on the wrist,” Cormier said.
If residents are late paying their water bills, they will have to pay the full bill, plus the penalty.
“It will be incentive for them to call us and make payment arrangements, which we allow,” Mayor Robert Gregory said.
City Secretary/Treasurer Angela Cantu said utilities customers will be notified on their water bills of the upcoming changes.
Also at the meeting:
•Eloi Cormier was sworn in to fill the remaining term of former Councilman Bobby Richter, who passed away earlier this year.
•The council approved for enforcement of traffic control, including left-turn restrictions from some access at H-E-B and the La Vernia Crossing Subdivision.
•Recognized all participants in the “Shattered Dreams” program in April, which highlighted for the community the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
