FLORESVILLE -- There will be no official Independence Day celebration hosted in the city of Floresville this year. However, the city pool will be open and admission will be free, said City Secretary Sherry Pollok.

In years past, the city opened the Floresville River Park to a July 4 event, with the Floresville Chamber of Commerce assisting with admission and ticket sales, and the Floresville Economic Development Corp. (FEDC) sponsoring fireworks after dark. Organizations and vendors offered food and wares, along with live music and entertainment.

The “Freedom Fest” had been scheduled; however, event coordinator Tom Robles -- a member of the Floresville Parks Foundation -- advised the Wilson County News last week it was canceled.

FEDC Interim Executive Director Raymond “Ram” Ramirez said the corporation was unable to contribute to the event, due to a “money crunch” and commitments of the corporation.

“We really have to watch what we spend,” Ramirez said.

Chamber President Philip Vipond said the chamber had not been asked to assist this year; he understood the cancellation is due to the city “freezing unnecessary spending” as it addresses financial concerns.

Pollok confirmed by phone June 21 the event would not take place. She said the city pool, located in the Floresville River Park, will be open and free to the public on Thursday, July 4, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

For more information, call City Hall at 830-393-3105 or the pool, 830-393-3108.

Funny.. weren't we awash in money and about to spend it on a ball park not so long ago? I think the previous admin should be forced to be accountable for their misrepresentations.

Blame Jesse, Danny, Johnny G, Castillo and Joslin. They are all part of the corruption and greed that stole our tax dollars and lined their pockets.

Funny how those who try to be careful with our money are criticized, but those who waste it seldom are. Kind of shows up the nanny state mentality does it not?
