Floresville ISD superintendent to call it quits
Dr. Jerry Lee Hunkapiller
FLORESVILLE -- Dr. Jerry Lee Hunkapiller, who for slightly less than two years has served as the superintendent of the Floresville Independent School District (ISD), will resign from that position in the coming week. Hunkapiller confirmed this June 21 by telephone.
This news prompted the Floresville ISD board of trustees to call a special meeting June 26. The meeting comes on the heels of a June 17 meeting, which at times became heated, as residents scolded Hunkapiller and the board over perceived problems within the district. For more about the June 17 meeting, see article page 2A.
Since that meeting, rumors have circulated through the community that Hunkapiller was on his way out.
“We just need to get back home closer to the family,” said Hunkapiller, whose family hails from North Texas.
The superintendent, who will be seeking a position in another district, said the resignation was not related to a closed-session discussion June 17, which pertained to controversy surrounding a KSAT-12 news story that aired June 3. (See “FISD super responds to TV news story,” June 12.)
Hunkapiller took the Floresville ISD’s top leadership post Aug. 1, 2011, after being selected by the board a month earlier. The former Millsap ISD superintendent succeeded Dr. David Vinson, who resigned the post after six years to accept a similar position in the Wylie ISD.
