County proceeds with IT department plan

The Wilson County Commissioners Court is proceeding with its push to create a new department, charged with overseeing information technology (IT) for the county’s offices. The commissioners voted unanimously at a June 20 special meeting to create the one-person department.
With the new IT department also will come the hire of an additional employee, who will serve as a department head, according to the motion recommended by County Attorney Daynah Fallwell. The new staff member will be compensated at a salary of $65,000, with standard county benefits.
Prior to the commissioners convening for approximately one hour in closed session, Floresville resident Brenna Presnall -- an IT professional -- spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting. Presnall expressed concerns after reading an article in the June 12 edition of the Wilson County News about the county’s budgetary goals related to the IT department.
In that article, it was reported that County Auditor Verna Gorzell estimated that it would cost $150,000 per year to pay two employees and purchase equipment. The county currently spends approximately $100,000 per year on IT expenses, receiving these services from an outside firm.
Presnall said the county’s estimates are unrealistic, and that the commissioners first should utilize the services of an IT consultant to help devise a plan prior to making any further expenditures.
Following the meeting, Gorzell said the $65,000 salary is based on the salaries for similar employees in surrounding counties. While the employee will be responsible for addressing the computing needs within seven county-owned buildings, the auditor said Fallwell still was compiling an actual job description.
In attendance: Wilson County Judge Marvin Quinney and commissioners Albert Gamez Jr., Paul Pfeil, Ricky Morales, and Larry Wiley; County Clerk Eva Martinez, Auditor Verna Gorzell, Treasurer Jan Hartl, County Attorney Daynah Fallwell, Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Sara Canady, Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace Jim Burdette, and Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Richard “Dickie” Jackson.
