Five teams place in state’s top 10

The La Vernia FFA chapter wrapped up another great year at its May 14 banquet. Many achievements were announced throughout the night, including the Leadership Development Events and Career Development Events team accomplishments, along with individual scholarships and chapter degrees.

To start off the night, the following FFA degrees were awarded, including:

•Star Greenhand Degree -- Jaelyn Kotzur and Bo Garcia.

•Star Chapter Farmer Degree -- Braden Recker, Samantha Kravitz, Annie Lowak, and Allison Bukowski.

•Star Lone Star Degree -- Kourtney Sells and Coby Mills.

The Horizon Award was presented to Katy Scott for high agricultural and academic achievements.

The Distinguished Service Award, which is given to outstanding community members who greatly help and support the FFA, was presented to Kimi Kravitz, Carol Mills, and the La Vernia Country Store.

The Senior Ag Mechanics Award was given to Garrett Rabel, Cody Moore, Zach Cook, and Elliot Renshaw. The Senior Service Award was awarded to Mariel McFadin and Taylor Penshorn.

Scholarships were handed out to the following seniors, including:

•Taylor Penshorn -- the Wade Busby Memorial Scholarship, the National Ford Scholarship, the La Vernia Chamber of Commerce Scholarship, the La Vernia FFA Scholarship, and the Kim Jacob Memorial Scholarship

•Mariel McFadin -- the Wade Busby Memorial Scholarship, the Wilson County and Texas District 12 Farm Bureau scholarships, the La Vernia Chamber of Commerce Scholarship, and the Kim Jacob Memorial Scholarship

•Jessica Wiley -- the Y’all Come Back (YCB) Scholarship

•Kristen Klein -- the Kim Jacob Memorial Scholarship

•Valerie Swygard -- the La Vernia Chamber of Commerce Scholarship.

Many of the leadership and judging teams did well. In the fall, the Senior and Junior Quiz teams advanced to state competition. In the spring, the Agriculture Mechanics Team and the Floriculture Team also represented La Vernia at state competition.

Many other teams did well this year, including the Junior and Senior Chapter Conducting Teams, the Junior and Senior Skills teams, the Livestock Judging Team, the Poultry Judging Team, and the Tractor Tech Team, as well as La Vernia’s individual competitors in the Creed Speaking and Job Interview competitions.

The Dairy Products Judging Team did especially well this year, placing first at District, Area, and State. They will be advancing to nationals this October in Louisville, Ky.
