BASTROP -- Members of the Independent Cattlemen’s Association of Texas (ICA) got a pep talk from former Texas A&M University Head Football Coach R.C. Slocum as he stressed the importance of uniting as one TEAM (Together Each Achieves More).

He shared his philosophy of life that helped make him the winningest football coach in A&M history, headlining the 39th annual ICA convention June 28 in the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort & Spa in Bastrop. Slocum takes pride in farming/ranching, the most important industry in the world, he said. With the drought, those involved in the ranching industry face a “fine line between winning and losing,” he said.

Summing up the recent legislative session, he said “too many people sit around” and only if people unite collectively, then a bigger voice is heard. He concluded his speech with a quote from Edmond Burke, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

Leaders honored

Also during the event, ICA leaders recognized state Rep. John Kuempel and Dr. Bryan W. Show of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality with the Cattlemen’s Council Award. This award is given for the gentlemen’s outstanding contribution to the cattle industry.

Receiving the Trail Blazer Award from the South Central Texas ICA (SCTICA) were Gus and Susan Gonzalez of Poteet. Presently, Gus serves as vice president of the organization, and Susan is the chapter’s secretary.

The couple have been involved with the cattle industry since 1975, with a small cow/calf operation. In 2007, they moved to Poteet and continued in the cattle industry.

The two are “very active with the San Antonio Livestock Exposition where they are both directors and volunteer with the Medical Committee.”

While Susan states they did not come from an ag background, their children were introduced through the 4-H and FFA organizations. While both of their children showed animals, they were also members of national FFA teams representing East Central FFA.

“Our son was on the national winning FFA dairy judging team from East Central back in the early ’90s,” Susan said. “Our daughter was on the national winning FFA meat judging team from East Central in the early ’90s.”

The couple credits A.L. “Windy” Miller of Poteet for recruiting them into the ICA.

“We felt it was a good organization that had our interests in mind,” Susan said.

Donations

Anyone attending a local chapter meeting or even the Buck Taylor South Central Texas ICA Benefit Team Ropin’ event will see the couple busily registering people, serving the meal, or just promoting the chapter and the cattle industry.

The last roping event was such a success that ICA chapter President Brad Cotton presented the state organization with a $2,500 donation.

This was in addition to a small trailer donated to the state ICA Convention & Trade Show. This was the fifth year the local organization has teamed up with the Floresville High School welding class to fabricate the trailer as a community project.

During the convention, other speakers discussed border patrol issues, the diseases threatening Texas livestock, state and national cattle groups, and the new beef promotion made possible by the National Beef Check-off program. Watch for more articles in coming issues.

For more information about the local ICA chapter, contact Cotton at 830-391-0337.
