1925-2013

Bernice T. Sekula Stein entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, July 10, 2013. She was born Dec. 11, 1925, in Poth, Texas, to Ignatius and Bernice (Gabrysch) Sekula.

Bernice met her husband at the PX at Lackland Air Force Base, where she was working as a “soda jerk,” and “the rest is history.” Bernice was a devout Catholic and an active member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church for 45 years. She was a member of The Ladies Altar Society, and she served as “room mother” for the church’s grade school. For the last 19 years she was an active member of St. Helena’s Catholic Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, James “Jim” Stein; her daughter, Cindy Stein Woitena; her siblings, Minnie Casares, Katie Kollodziej, Victoria Dupnick, Mary Vaughan, Leon Sekula, Anthony Sekula, and Benedict Sekula.

Bernice is survived by daughters Donna Kroesche and husband Ken, Susie Stewart and husband John, and Bernice “Franny” Friesenhahn and husband Larry; sister Christine Ingle; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, July 16, from 5-9 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. in the Mission Park Funeral Chapel South in San Antonio.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Helena’s Catholic Church in San Antonio.

Interment will follow in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in San Antonio.
