Poth prepares for emergency landings, plans helo pad site
The city of Poth will install a helicopter pad for emergency use, probably within the next two weeks.
Mayor Travis Pruski confirmed the Poth City Council approved the pad by unanimous vote during the July 15 council meeting.
“AirLife has been using the Catholic church parking lot,” Pruski said after the meeting. “And we’ve had a lot more use with the oil and gas exploration activity in the area.”
The Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church will donate some pasture land located behind its parish hall, Pruski said. A concrete slab, approximately 50 feet by 50 feet, will be poured by David Herrera, a local contractor, at a cost of approximately $10,000. The city will pay the costs up front; reimbursement will come from several entities and organizations, including AirLife, the Poth Volunteer Fire Department, some oil and gas companies, and others, according to the mayor. Assistance with logistics and organization will come from Wilson County Pct. 2 Commissioner Paul Pfeil.
Also during the meeting, the city heard a follow-up report from Jim Helmke regarding a ham radio event held June 22-23 in the Poth City Park. The Wilson County Amateur Radio Club/ARES joined other similar organizations across the country and around the globe that day to demonstrate how amateur radio -- ham radio -- helps provide communications during a major emergency.
“They had contact with operators in Japan, Europe, and across the country,” Pruski said.
The group will hold similar events this fall and next spring in the park, the mayor said.
