1933-2013

Gloria Elizondo, a loving daughter, sister, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to the end, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at the age of 79. She was born on Nov. 4, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas, nee Maria Magdalena as the seventh of eight children to Antonio and Pilar Valdez.

As the second youngest of eight children, she devoutly and without hesitation cared for any sibling in need at the drop of a hat. She did the same for her parents when they needed extra care, all the while never neglecting her family, friends, and church community. She was devout in her faith and lived her life as a true child of God and follower of Christ, who served as a true role model in every aspect of her life. She loved to cook, enjoyed reading romance novels, tending to her flower gardens, dancing to ’50s tunes, collecting dolls, and playing the slots in Las Vegas. She was a quiet yet humorous and classy lady all in one who loved music and dancing in her courting days with her future husband and was always a big fan of the Spurs and Cowboys. She was especially enthralled with the birth of each of her four grandchildren and uniquely attached and involved with each one of them. She was eagerly involved with caring for her grandbabies on a daily basis when they were young and later every summer and every possible moment during school breaks and weekend vacations.

She will be dearly missed but will always remain in our hearts. The family would especially like to thank Virginia Bernal, who for many years cared for Gloria at home and continues to selflessly help out daily at home. Virginia and her husband, Jesse, have always been a vital strength and aid to the many needs of Gloria and Rudy. A special thanks also goes out to Mary Ann Vaughn, who, as a cousin to the family, has also made herself available on a moment’s notice to help out.

Gloria is survived by her devoted loving husband of 57 years, Rudy Elizondo; her two loving children, Ronald Elizondo and Velma Garcia and husband Michael; her four adoring grandchildren, Erica, Andreana, and Nicolas Garcia and Ryan Elizondo; sister Lillian Meza; one godson, Alex Riojas Jr.; and countless wonderful friends and relatives.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, July 23, from 3-9 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m. in the Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers in San Antonio.

A funeral Mass was held on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in San Antonio.

Interment followed in the San Fernando Catholic Cemetery II in San Antonio.
