Eagle Ford: TCEQ approves human-waste permit

NIXON -- The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has approved registration for Gordon Swenson to apply domestic septage on 298.3 acres of property that straddles the Gonzales/Wilson county line.

The acreage is part of larger holdings, totaling approximately 401.63 acres, located on C.R. 483 near Nixon. The registration is good for five years and allows Swenson to apply septage -- treated human waste -- to fertilize a hay field. According to engineer Donald Rauschuber, representing Swenson in a March 28 presentation in Wilson County, the waste is the irreducible solids left in a septic tank after treatment. These solids are periodically pumped from the tank to prevent settling and filling the tank; residential septic tanks are designed to retain sludge for one to three years, Rauschuber said.

The TCEQ approval follows a March 28 public hearing in the Wilson County Criminal Justice Center in Floresville. Residents of Gonzales and Wilson counties packed the meeting to oppose the application.

A chief opponent of the application, Dr. Jim Story, owns property near the approved site. A neurologist, Story said at the time, “Residential septage is rife with [viruses] and remnants of illegal drugs, heavy metals, and other substances.”

Entities that approved resolutions opposing Swenson’s application include the Wilson County Commissioners Court, the Nixon Hospital District, and the Nixon-Smiley, Floresville, Poth, and Stockdale school districts.

Senior Citizen.....Were you referring to placing my prized tomato into the septic tank before processing ? I think the seeds ended up in the sludge through natural means and god produced a fine product through his magic. :)

You said it, Prairie. You'd think someone wanted to put in a septic tank, for heaven's sake!
