FLORESVILLE -- The landscape here continues to change as new buildings pop up in the city. During the July 25 meeting of the Floresville City Council, City Manager Andy Joslin gave an update on the many projects under way around town:

•McCoy’s Building Supply: The finishing touches are being applied to the home-improvement center on U.S. 181, which is set to open Aug. 12. In addition to a new street -- Wilson Drive, which will connect U.S. 181 to the parallel C.R. 301 -- being constructed on the edge of the property, a turning lane is being installed on southbound U.S. 181 at McCoy’s expense.

•The former Walmart store on U.S. 181: A developer has purchased the building and intends to divide it into four suites that will include a Dollar Tree, an expanded Anytime Fitness, Cato, and Cheer Gym.

•Holiday Inn Express: The new hotel being built next to H-E-B on U.S. 181 near the corner of Tiger Lane is set to open Oct. 1.

•Super 8: A pavilion is being built onto the motel located on U.S. 181 near Hospital Boulevard, which will allow guests to barbecue and socialize outdoors.

•Deason Animal Hospital: The building located at the corner of U.S. 181 and D Street will be expanded.

Joslin also gave the council an update on the Floresville River Park. The lower portion of the park located near the S.H. 97 underpass remains closed following flooding that occurred over Memorial Day weekend. City officials continue talks with the San Antonio River Authority, as Wilson County was not included in a flood disaster declaration issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Also during the meeting, the council held a public hearing related to the voluntary annexation of land to include the 15.466-acre McCoy’s property. The council later voted unanimously to annex the property, which City Secretary Sherry Pollok said would expand the current city limits northbound on U.S. 181 to the corner of C.R. 331. With the earlier annexation of the Walmart Supercenter property across the street, both sides of U.S. 181 to the southern corners of the intersection now are within Floresville’s boundaries.

In other business, the council received reports from various city boards and committees, including the Floresville Parks Foundation Committee. For more, see related article page 3A ( http://www.wilsoncountynews.com/article.php?id=52606).

In attendance: Floresville Mayor Diana Garza and councilmen Jim Miller, Mario Morones, Sherry Martinez Castillo, John W. Guerrero, and Eric Rodriguez; City Manager Andy Joslin, City Secretary Sherry Pollok, City Attorney Louis T. Rosenberg, Cyndi Nichols of the city’s Permits and Code Compliance Office, city Comptroller Lara Feagins, Assistant City Secretary Monica Cordova, and Bailiff Albert Litterio of the Floresville Police Department.

Basically Eric...I just like to rattle PG's chain. I almost feel guilty for taking advantage of the handicapped.
