Local author shares hope, healing story
A story of hope and healing by La Vernia author Melissa Wootan will appear in Chicken Soup for the Soul: From Lemons to Lemonade, set to be released Aug. 13.
Near La Vernia, a husband-and-wife team transforms old discarded furniture into one-of-a-kind, “wow” pieces for the home. Imagine their surprise when they realized the furniture wasn’t the only thing being transformed.
On Dec. 18, 2008, Melissa and Joey Wootan returned home from some last-minute Christmas shopping for their children, Josh, 11, and, Kyley, 16. Two hours later, a knock on the door changed their lives forever. Kyley had died in a car accident just down the street. She was buried five days later, on her 17th birthday.
For Melissa, the months and years that followed were, at times, unbearable. When it became clear that Melissa was surrendering to her grief, Joey took action.
Melissa shares what happened next and the tale of their amazing journey in “Refurbished Me,” in Chicken Soup for the Soul: From Lemons to Lemonade. It is a story of hope, love, and healing transformations -- of both furniture and hearts.
Out of the ashes was born ChIC vInTiQuE, an accidental furniture venture; the two create “Inspiration for the Heart and Home” for more than 5,000 Facebook followers. ChiC vInTiQuE celebrated its one-year anniversary on Facebook June 14, and what a year it’s been!
After losing Kyley, Melissa began writing as a therapeutic tool to manage her grief. Her stories have appeared in Guideposts and several books in the popular Chicken Soup for the Soul series, including the national bestseller, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Messages from Heaven.
The latest in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series is available in major bookstores and at amazon.com.
