Daniel Sanchez Peña
Daniel Sanchez Peña of Runge, Texas, died at the age of 94 years and 7 months on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, after battling heart problems. He was at home surrounded by his loving family. Daniel was born on Jan. 11, 1919, to Manuel Cabrera Peña and Catarina Rodriguez Sanchez in Runge.
He grew up in a farming family and was called to serve his country during World War II. Daniel was awarded the European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four bronze service stars, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Honorable Service Lapel Button of World War II. He experienced events that changed his life, strengthened him, and made him a compassionate man. He guided his family in faith, love, honor, and in never giving up. Daniel played guitar and loved to sing. This made him enjoy life and all its wonders. He also loved to garden and enjoyed animals. Daniel returned from his service and married his sweetheart, Daria Mansanales. They were married in St. Mary’s Church in Panna Maria on Oct. 2, 1947. They had seven children. They shared their lives for 56 years until her death in 2003. Daniel then went to live in San Antonio with his oldest daughter, Carolina.
Daniel is survived by his daughter, Carolina Rodriguez and husband Ciro (and their daughter Xochil); son Robert Peña and wife Margaret (and their daughter Valerie and husband Braden Ford); daughter Herlinda Cisneros and husband Robert (and their son Michael); son Guillermo Peña and wife Melissa (and their daughter Monica); son Daniel Peña Jr. (and his son Rene and wife Claire and his sons Rene and Diego, and Daniel III and wife Shiela and his daughter Carrisma); daughter Odelia Peña (and her daughter Maria with her daughter Odelia); and his youngest son, Joe Peña and wife Olga (and their daughter Hannah and stepdaughter Nicole).
Visitation was held on Wednesday, July 31, from 5-9 p.m. with a rosary vigil at 7 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in Runge.
A funeral Mass was held on Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Runge, with the Rev. Norbert Herman officiating.
Interment followed in the Runge Latin American Cemetery in Runge.
Memorial contributions may be made by way of Mass intentions in memory of Daniel and Daria Peña, or to the maintenance of the historic Runge Latin American Cemetery.
