LA VERNIA -- Deputies from the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office continue their investigation into a shooting that occurred on C.R. 361 northwest of here just after midnight Aug. 2.
Sheriff’s Investigator Stephen Moore said there are conflicting stories about what occurred, but that both parties involved reported that one vehicle was following another on C.R. 361 and that shots were fired. A couple traveling in one of the vehicles made a telephone call to a family member, identified by deputies as Billy Hale. The couple relayed the situation to him and Hale said he would be waiting at his open gate.
Moore said the couple reported pulling into the gate. As Hale was standing outside, he said the other vehicle -- a Ford F-150 quad-cab pickup truck driven by 40-year-old Robert Claypool of Kicaster -- veered toward him, which prompted him to draw his .38 caliber revolver and fire at the oncoming pickup truck.
Moore said a shot penetrated the vehicle and struck Claypool in his left shoulder.
Claypool was flown via AirLife helicopter to University Hospital in San Antonio, Moore said, where he was treated and released.
Charges have not yet been filed, as the investigation is ongoing. At the conclusion of the probe, Moore said the case will be presented to a grand jury for its review.
