Watch ‘The Alamo’ at the Alamo
SAN ANTONIO -- A free outdoor screening of the major film release, “The Alamo,” is set for 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Alamo at 300 Alamo Plaza in San Antonio.
No, not at the dine-in movie house of the same name, but at the Alamo itself -- specifically, on the lawn behind the mission.
The public is welcome to take the entire family and set up lawn chairs or blankets to relive this pivotal moment in history where the famous Alamo battle took place. Space is limited to the first 400 patriots in line, with gates opening at 7:30 p.m.
The event is hosted by the Allies of the Alamo, the official membership program for the historic shrine. “Allies” members support educational and preservation programs within the Alamo complex. The movie -- released by Touchstone Pictures in 2004 and starring Billy Bob Thornton and Dennis Quaid -- also did its share to promote Texas history. An ad featuring Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson appeared before the film in digital theaters and appealed for donations to help restore and digitally preserve historic documents of the General Land Office Archives. Since the movie came out, the Save Texas History program has helped conserve and digitize more than 1.6 million documents and maps.
Sharp-eyed moviegoers may also spot Patterson in the film. He portrayed Texan George Nail, a survivor of the Battle of San Jacinto calling for the execution of captured Mexican dictator Santa Anna. His only line? “Hang him! Hang him!”
Refreshments will be sold and vending machines will be fully stocked (no outside beverages or food).
