1919-2013

Mary Louise Tewes, 94, of Stockdale, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, in Seguin. She was born on May 3, 1919, to William F. and Calloway “Callie” H. (Seale) Koch in Karnes City.

Mary Louise graduated from Seguin High School and attended Texas Lutheran University, where she was a member of the a cappella choir. She had been the choir director for the teenage girls at the Methodist Church in Seguin. Prior to her marriage she was employed in the civil service as an office supervisor. On June 18, 1947, she married Eugene Louis Tewes and in 1950 moved to Stockdale, where they owned and operated the Western Auto associate store for 31 years. Throughout the years, Mary Louise composed sacred songs and piano selections. While raising her children, she gave voice lessons and later helped her husband with their business.

She was very active in church activities; served on the Administrative Council, was vice president of the Christ United Methodist Women, and was a chairperson of the Worship Committee. For organizing and directing the choir for more than 50 years, she received a nomination for the Bishop’s Exemplar Award for the San Antonio District of the United Methodist Church. Throughout the years she had the privilege of singing at the Myers and Finch Funeral Chapels and other occasions including weddings and coronations. She also served on the committees for the Stockdale Watermelon Jubilee and Chamber of Commerce. The 40th Watermelon Jubilee was dedicated to her for her years of service for decorating and maintaining the floats. She was also a member of the Blue Bonnet Club and the Order of the Eastern Star, where she was their organist. She held different offices during her involvement in the PTA.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Louis Tewes; her parents; her in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Tewes; sister Hortense Greiner; sister-in-law Gertrude Tony; and niece Jeannine Greiner Schwartz.

Mary Louise is survived by her daughters, Eugenia Louise Flournoy and husband Robert of Lufkin, Mary Frances Hassmann and husband Harry of Stockdale, and Deborah Jean Windecker and husband Ronald of Garden Ridge; grandchildren William and Alan Hassmann, Kevin Windecker and wife Hilary, Kody Windecker, Lisa McElveen and husband Clay, Derek Flournoy and wife Lisa Renee, and Erin Davis and husband Michael; great-grandchildren Jessica Johnson and husband Zachary, Katy McElveen, and Lindsey McElveen and Chandler Davis, Alyx and Grant Flournoy, and Lee Ann Hassmann; and great-great-grandchild Ellie M. McElveen.

Visitation was held on Friday, Aug. 9, from 5-8 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in Stockdale.

A funeral service was held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Ronald Windecker and the Rev. Dr. John Schwartz officiating.

Interment followed in the Concrete Cemetery in La Vernia.

Memorial donations may be made to the Christ United Methodist Church in Stockdale, Stockdale EMS, Stockdale Fire Department, and Guadalupe Regional Hospice in Seguin.
