FLORESVILLE -- One driver has sustained injuries and a utility pole was damaged, causing an electrical outage Aug. 12 after an early morning accident on S.H. 97 East near Floresville.
According to Cpl. Javier Reyes of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol, Jessie Tatum, 74, of Sutherland Springs was traveling westbound and waiting to turn left onto C.R. 402 when several drivers came up behind her. The first approaching vehicle passed Tatum’s 1986 Chevrolet pickup truck on the right shoulder. Another successfully passed on her left. A third vehicle, a pickup truck pulling a trailer driven by James Tyler of La Vernia, didn’t fare as well.
Though Tyler attempted to avoid colliding with Tatum’s truck, Tatum already had begun her intended left turn; Tyler could not avoid side-to-side contact as he passed on her left. Tatum’s vehicle was pushed off the road and into a utility pole. The pole split into several pieces, causing a power outage.
Floresville Electric Light & Power System workers were contacted and had service restored within a few hours.
Tatum refused emergency medical treatment at the scene Reyes said.
