I would like to start off by saying “thank you” to the folks who live and work on the roads that were repaved during the month of July! I know construction is never pleasant, but is a necessity as we try to keep our streets in good condition. We selected this paving contractor in part because the material utilized is recycled and -- with a concrete bonding agent that is added -- strengthens the road and, hopefully, will make it last for many years to come. Again, I thank you for your patience exhibited during this process!

The Greater La Vernia Parks Foundation’s BBQ Cook-Off took place last weekend and I hope you got a chance to come out and enjoy the good food and hear some great music. I especially enjoyed watching La Vernia’s own “Willie the Kid” shoot ’em up with the South Texas Gunfighters! Good job, Kid! Proceeds from this event help fund improvements to your city park, and I want to say, “Thank you, LV Parks Foundation” for all your hard work and dedication to our city!

On the subject of the park, I would like to ask your help in utilizing the trash receptacles that are stationed all around the facility. We try hard to keep overhead low at City Hall and a large amount of time is spent picking up litter all around the park -- in some cases, right next to a trash can -- so please help us keep your park litter-free.

At City Hall, we have selected a drilling contractor to get started on the new water supply well! This project has been a long time coming and many people have spent hours working to get us to this point. Thanks to all of you, which includes our past mayor and council members, for your contributions on this project.

The school year is upon us now, and I want to remind everyone the use of a cell phone in the school zones is prohibited. Please be aware that F.M. 775 will become very congested in the mornings and afternoons, so let’s watch out for the children and traffic-control officers.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer and hope to see you now under the “Friday Night Lights!” Go, Bears!

Robert Gregory is the mayor of La Vernia.
