The Stockdale Blue Bonnet Club met Aug. 12 in the home of Kay Deagen for the regular monthly business meeting. Prior to the meeting, the hostess provided refreshments to the members and guest.

President Bernice Person called the meeting to order. Due to a guest speaker, the program was presented before the conduction of the club’s business portion of the meeting.

Barbara Wiatrek, program leader, introduced Jenna Wiatrek Cotter, science teacher with the Stockdale Independent School District and also the Wilson County 4-H entomology leader of the 9- to 18-year-old students. This team recently received first place at state competition at Texas A&M in College Station.

Entomology is the study of insects and there are four million types of insects in the world. Most people’s first thought of insects is “ew, gross!” or that all insects are bad. Ninety-five percent of all insects are either good or neutral. A neutral insect is one that isn’t beneficial, but does not cause any harm. Various species were shown to the club. Lady Beetles (ladybugs) are such good predators that garden stores sell them as a form of pest control. Butterflies are important pollinators. Termites, flies, and beetles are recyclers and decomposers. Insects that transmit diseases, sting, or cause allergic reactions are medically important insects, such as mosquitoes, red imported fire ants, bees, and wasps. The female mosquito is the most deadly insect due to the transmission of many diseases. A question-and-answer time concluded the program.

Secretary Vanessa Bosanko read the minutes of the June meeting, gave the treasurer’s report, and conducted the roll call with 13 members present.

Committee report were given. Billie Jo Wolff, nursing home bingo chairman, provided prizes in July and will take them again Oct. 27 for the club. The card chairman reported sending 35 cards in June and July. Helen Deason, social chairman, reported on the July outing at the Gruene River Grill with 13 members and one guest in attendance. July nursing home visitor Bernice Person provided bananas for bingo prizes at the Stockdale Nursing Center.

Hostess for the September meeting will be Vanessa Bosanko, with Judy Childress to serve as program leader. Sharon West will serve as the September nursing home visitor.

In attendance for the meeting were members Charlin Akin, Edith Akin, Vanessa Bosanko, Linda Carden, Kay Deagen, Gina Deason, Helen Deason, Mary Denson, Sue McLelland, Bernice Person, Barbara Wiatrek, Billie Jo Wolff, Teri Wolff, and guest Jenna Cotter.
