Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro
Attendees of the World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, (from left) Sierra Garza, Carmen Kuhlmann, and Gabriella Jasso, did not let the cold and rain stop them from visiting Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) atop Mount Corovado. The ladies are members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Stockdale.
RIO DE JANEIRO -- Sierra Garza, Carmen Kuhlmann, and Gabriella Jasso of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Stockdale joined a group of pilgrims from the San Antonio Archdiocese to World Youth Day in July in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
While there, they visited the statue of Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) atop Mount Corovado. The statue, finished in 1931, weighs 625 tons and the outstretched arms measure 92 feet.
Participants were blessed to participate in opening ceremonies to welcome Pope Francis, meditate on the Way of the Cross led by the Holy Father, pray and worship with him at the Saturday Vigil, and celebrate Mass with him and 3 million enthusiastic and faith-filled young people.
The hospitality and love shown them by their host families and parishes for two weeks in Petropolis and Rio was phenomenal and humbling.
They also appreciate the support, guidance, catechesis, and love of Archbishop Gustavo Garc’a-Siller, the Rev. Jonathan Felux, the Rev. Carlos Velazquez, the Rev. John Restrepo, and the Rev. Roney Cardoso, who traveled with them.
This was truly an experience of a lifetime. World Youth Day 2016 will be in Poland.
