LA VERNIA -- Police here are urging area merchants to be on the lookout for counterfeit paper money.

Sgt. Danny Pitts of the La Vernia Police Department said Aug. 21 that over the past three days, officers have received reports of counterfeit $1, $10, and $20 bills being used at the H-E-B supermarket and the Sonic Drive-In restaurant, both on U.S. 87. He advises merchants and consumers alike to be cautious when giving and receiving change.

There are a variety of methods one can use to determine whether bills are legitimate. In addition to the watermarks and security features found on bills $5 or larger, Pitts also suggests using a counterfeit detection marker or ultraviolet pens. When in doubt, he said, take the bills to a bank or to the police.

Anyone with information related to these incidents is asked to call the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office dispatch at 830-393-2535. Anonymous tips -- which could qualify for a cash reward if police make an arrest -- can be furnished to Crime Stoppers of Wilson County at 830-393-INFO (4636) or http://bit.ly/NDrIut.

@Eugene. They were trained to come inside and check $20 bills and up with the pen. Which is what he did. That is when he showed the manager. Needless to say he has his own pen now.

That's a good lesson, indeed, Pam. Life is full of teachable moments but too many of us allow these moments to slip by without ever learning. I love eating at the Sonic in La Vernia!
