1913-2013

Jean Fay Zeeryp Blake, 100, of Seguin, Texas, formerly of Floresville, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013. Jean was born on Feb. 13, 1913, in Yonkers, N.Y., to James Leslie and Berta Clair Fay Zeeryp. She attended Highland Park High School in Dallas and Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo. She met the love of her life, John, on a blind date while visiting her aunt, Ethel Davis, in St. Louis, where he was attending medical school at Washington University. They eloped on April 23, 1932, and were married for 62 years. Jean spent most of her married life in Floresville where John practiced medicine for more than 50 years.

They traveled extensively all over the United States, Canada, Alaska, and Mexico in their Air Stream trailer making many friends along the way. Jean will be remembered as an avid golfer, tennis player, bird watcher, bridge player, and good cook. She was a charter member of the volunteers at Floresville Memorial Hospital. Jean was also a member of the United Methodist Church. After retirement they moved to Seguin to live on the “Chaparral Golf Course” where they played golf almost every day.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, John; her grandson, Walter Blake Miller; and her parents.

She is survived by her daughter, Berta Jean Blake Pilgrim and husband Richard “Dick”; granddaughter Cynthia Miller Brewer; great-grandson John Roger Brewer; niece Mary Blake Gaddis and husband Ben of Hilo, Hawaii; nephew John Lamar of Floresville; and loving and faithful caregivers Nierma Rodriguez and Molly Hernandez.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 3:30 p.m. in the Floresville City Cemetery in Floresville, with the Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating.

Interment will be held in the Floresville City Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Guadalupe Regional Hospice, 1215 East Court, Seguin, TX 78155.

Indeed, I have heard the name of Dr. Blake often since I moved to Wilson County. Certainly an icon. Prayers and condolences to the family on the passing of someone so well known and respected in the community.
