Education building dedicated to Maples
Frederick E. Maples Jr. of Floresville arrives with his daughter, Stacy Hrna, Aug. 5 in San Antonio for a dedication ceremony honoring Maples for his 42 years’ service on the board of Education Service Center, Region 20.
More than 200 people cheered and applauded Aug. 5 as Frederick E. Maples Jr. arrived at the Education Service Center, Region 20 in San Antonio.
Maples, of Floresville, looked up at the conference center building to see a tarp covering the front of it. Was there damage to the building with repairs in progress? He was surprised to be asked to cut a yellow ribbon blocking the entrance to the building. The tarp dropped, and the man who served for so many years on the board of directors of Education Service Center, Region 20 was stunned to read the lettering on the building: Frederick E. Maples, Jr. Conference Center.
The center was dedicated to Maples for his continuous, outstanding leadership and service to the mission of Region 20 and the Texas System of Education Service Centers. Gathering to recognize him were former and current board members, executive directors, and employees of Region 20, along with Maples’ family and friends. Everyone came together to celebrate and thank him for his 42 years of service on the board of directors. He served as board chairman for 23 years, secretary for eight years, and past president of the Texas Association of Education Service Centers. Prior to serving Region 20, Maples was a trustee for the East Central Independent School District.
Maples is the longest-serving board member of any Education Service Center in Texas.
A reception inside the newly dedicated Maples Conference Center followed the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Stories and memories of Maples’ service were shared with laughter, respect, and references to his passion for education and his vision for the center coming to fruition.
When asked what he thought of the dedication, he said, “I am totally floored and deeply honored.”
The regional education service agencies in Texas assist school districts in improving student performance and increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of school operations. Region 20’s relationship with 51 school districts is collaborative and supportive. The center provides products and services for the educational community.
