Floresville ISD touts past STAAR results

FLORESVILLE -- Preliminary indications are that students within the Floresville Independent School District who took the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) during the 2012-13 school year met the required standards. This is according to the district’s Director of Assessment and Special Programs Jamie Payne during the Aug. 20 board of trustees meeting.
“During the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) to STAAR transition, the state has and is continuing to change the rating system in Texas,” he said. “The current system will move to a letter grade accountability rating, but during the transition districts and campuses are either rated ‘Met Standard’ or ‘Improvement Required.’”
The Floresville South Elementary School was second only to the South Georgia Elementary School in the Amarillo ISD among a group of 40 similar schools statewide. Payne said schools are grouped according to similar socioeconomic and ethnic makeup.
The STAAR numbers are preliminary, as a full report will not be released before October, Payne said. However, the district already has plans to form a team to address the findings, so improvements can be made during the current school year.
In attendance: Board members Bill Meuth, John Raabe, Ryan Bippert, Neysa Choate, and Rachel Peña; Interim Superintendent Sherri Bays, Director of Assessment and Special Programs Jamie Payne, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Clay Rosenbaum, Assistant Superintendent for Finance Mike McSwain, Director of Maintenance Charles Bump, Floresville Alternative Education Center Principal Bud Box, Floresville High School Principal Sandra Galinzoga, Floresville Middle School Principal Sara Mann, Floresville North Elementary School Principal Mike Schroller, and Floresville South Elementary School Principal Shelley Keck.
