2013 Fall Sports Preview: Change is the way in Stockdale
Keana Savage (2) and Katelyn Shaver (4) of Stockdale look on as teammate Jillian Jeane (5) goes up for a block.
STOCKDALE -- Big changes have come to Stockdale, as former graduate Katy Wiatrek moves home and takes over the Lady Brahma volleyball program.
Wiatrek is happy to have returned home, and said “it was the right time.” And while she may be on familiar ground in Stockdale, for her team, everything is different this year.
Wiatrek comes to Stockdale by way of Class 5A Taft High School in San Antonio. She spent the past seven years there with the Raiders, and has learned a lot that she plans to bring to the Lady Brahmas.
“Our team motto is ‘Be the Change,’” she said. “There are lots of changes.”
Wiatrek wants to try and bring that 5A mentality and focus to a 2A program. She knows it could be a challenge, but thinks the girls will respond well, especially once they begin to reap the rewards of their efforts.
“If you do all those things, winning becomes the bi-product,” Wiatrek said.
She believes the biggest change in Stockdale is going to be the intensity level that will be required every time her athletes touch the floor. To help them get there, Wiatrek plans to use the team’s practice sessions to their fullest.
“I am a big believer in having practices where everyone is always moving,” she said. “There is always something next, and something to do. They should never be standing still.”
Adopting this new level of intensity should come easier to those with varsity experience from last year. The Lady Brahmas did lose several players to graduation, but have five ladies back for the 2013 season. Among those returning are senior Katelyn Shaver, and juniors Keana Savage, Ashley Fowler, Kristen Moore, and Hanna Deagen.
District 28-2A remains the same in 2013, and will once again stand as one of the toughest districts in the state. Schulenburg is currently the state’s No 1-ranked team in Class 2A, and Poth is eager to reclaim its spot at the top of that list. Hallettsville is also a quality team, and Karnes City has shown its ability to win big games in the past. Nixon-Smiley and Luling round out the competition.
Wiatrek is enthusiastic about competing in such a difficult district, though, and believes it will only make her team better in the end.
“I’m excited and proud to be part of this district,” she said.
Wiatrek has set a few goals for the team, but said that process will be left primarily to her girls. Her job is to get them playing together, and then believes it is up to them to determine how far they want to take it.
“There is a lot of potential,” Wiatrek said of her team, “but potential needs to turn into action.”
The Lady Brahmas did get off to a great start, and were 6-2 heading into the Cedar Creek Tournament last weekend. Stockdale will continue its non-district schedule through the early part of September, and will begin 28-2A play with a trip to Hallettsville on Friday, Sept. 13. The team’s first district home game will be against the Schulenburg Shorthorns on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m.
