STOCKDALE -- Heading into his third year as the head football coach and athletic director at Stockdale High School, Josh West is feeling pretty good about the 2013 season.

For starters, the Brahmas are bringing back a big part of their offense. A total of seven starters will be back on the field, and among them are four linemen.

“That is going to be a big strength of ours,” West said.

He elaborated to say that the average weight of his linemen is somewhere in the 275-pound range, and that even the backups are “big.”

“We just need to work on aggressiveness a bit,” he added.

No major changes are expected of the offense, and West said they want to control the ball and the clock, keeping it out of the opponents’ hands as much as possible. The Brahmas have some holes to fill, but do return a great deal of talent. West is expecting a big year from running back Matt Valadez, as well as linemen Dylan Dunn and Zach Pfeil.

Senior Jacob Cardenas will be under center for the Brahmas this year, and West feels good about that, saying Cardenas knows the system well. The Brahmas are likely to keep the ball on the ground for the most part, but should have the ability to make some plays through the air, in keeping with West’s goal of being “versatile.”

Defensively, the Brahmas will return another seven starters. West admits that some of his players from last year will be “hard to replace,” but he is also confident that someone will step up. He is expecting a big year from linebackers Dylan Dunn, Cole McGrew, and Jacob Urrabazo, and West feels that Josh Carroll should be a strong presence on the defensive front.

“He is very strong and hard to block,” West said of Carroll.

District 15-2A DII remains the same this year, and the biggest obstacles will once again be Karnes City, Poth, and Dilley. The Brahmas’ first district game will be at Dilley this year, and West thinks it could set the tone for their entire district run.

To help prepare for district play, the Brahmas will face Jourdanton, Falls City, and Cole to start the season. Jourdanton is a big, physical team, and the Falls City Beavers are always competitive. Cole has some good speed, and should be a good test for Stockdale.

When it comes to team strengths, West has plenty to be excited about this year. He is thrilled with his team’s overall size, and said he has a great deal of quality senior leadership.

“We have guys in key roles that are two- and three-year starters,” he said. “That is great for us.”

As for those issues of concern, West said his team must be physical, but has to stay healthy at the same time.

“We don’t have the depth to rotate everywhere,” he said. “We will have several players going both ways, so we have to stay healthy all year.”

Goals are always an important part of each season, and West confirmed his team’s recurring goal is to win a district title. The Brahmas are also eyeing a spot in postseason play, and then want to “make some noise in the playoffs.”

“We are capable of doing it,” West said. “We’ve just got to work hard.”

Getting better every week is something West preaches to his players, and he added that his team needs to play “from start to finish.”

“We can’t take days off and win football games,” he said. “We have to be mentally tougher than our opponents to succeed.”

Stockdale begins its 2013 season at Cole, and then plays at home against Jourdanton and Falls City. The Brahmas will battle with the Cougars this Friday, Aug. 30. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on Fort Sam Houston.
