POTH -- The Pirette volleyball team had a bit different look about it last season. The players were quite young and inexperienced, returning just two members from the previous year’s roster. In 2013, however, seven players are back, and experience shouldn’t be an issue.

Despite their relative youth last year, the Pirettes came together and made a solid run at their season. The team finished with an overall record of 30-20, making a 10-2 run through district, and eventually reaching the Region IV finals. Poth fell to district rival Schulenburg in the finals, and while the year may not have been completely “satisfying” to those in Poth, the season was truly a success.

Led by seniors Devon Dylla and Jordan Schneider, this year’s team is hard at working making the efforts necessary to return Poth to the top, and to once again make a bid for the state title. Juniors Amanda Wauters, Shelby Yanta, Alyssa Kruse, and Alyssa Kallies were all a big part of the Pirettes’ success last season, and bring another year of experience to the table.

The Pirettes started their 2013 season with a bit of a stumble, falling to Somerset in their opener, and then to Smithson Valley in their second match. Poth then took a road trip up to Austin to compete in a tournament, though, finding its first wins of the season against Austin Akins and Ann Richards. A couple more wins and a few more losses concluded the Pirettes’ trip to the capital city.

So what does that tell us about the Pirettes this year? Not very much.

Poth generally starts the season at or near the top of the rankings, but as of press time was not listed among the top 10, though they were on the list initially. Rankings don’t really mean anything, and everything will be settled on the court, but some people are a bit nervous in Poth. Head Coach Patti Zenner has been through the highs and lows with the Pirettes, and is always able to find ways to get the very best out of her players.

The district is the same again this year, and Schulenburg is the obvious team to beat. The Shorthorns are currently the state’s No. 1-ranked team in Class 2A, and started their year by winning every game they played during the first week of the season.

Things are just getting started, though, and everyone knows Poth plays the toughest non-district schedule it can put together. Squaring off with quality 4A and 5A teams is the norm for the Pirettes, and every match, whether win or lose, will help prepare them for the next.

Poth will continue its non-district schedule through August and into September. The Pirettes will begin District 28-2A competition Friday, Sept. 13, as Poth plays host to the Lady Mustangs of Nixon-Smiley.
