2013 Fall Sports Preview: Poth Pirates will challenge for district title
Members of the Poth Pirate football team spend time working on both offense and defense with the same drills.

POTH -- The Pirates lost some key players from last year’s roster, but that happens every year, and Head Coach Andrew King isn’t losing any sleep over it. He and his staff are motivated to get back on top of District 15-2A DII, and his players are just as fired up.
Poth had a solid season last year, going 8-2 in the regular season and 6-1 in district play to finish second. The Pirates picked up a big win in the bi-district round of the playoffs, but fell to Lexington in the area championship.
King said Poth won’t make any major changes this year, and will continue to do pretty much the same thing they have always done in his six years at the helm.
“It’s been good to us,” he said. “We are going to just keep working at getting better.”
The Pirates return five starters on offense and six on defense. King said he is expecting some big things from many guys, but perhaps has the highest expectations for players like Blake Lyssy, Thomas Krawietz, Jerrek Hosek, and John Waclawczyk. He knows many of the younger guys will also step up to fill needed roles, and that several guys have the potential to be big for Poth this season.
When it comes to the district, there are no changes for the Pirates this year. Poth plays in a crowded eight-team district, and will look to regain the crown from Karnes City. Dilley could also make a serious challenge for the title this year. Poth will continue its rivalry with Stockdale, and King said the Brahmas are “primed to make a run” this season. The Pirates will also square off with Nixon-Smiley, Cotulla, Natalia, and Bloomington.
With so many district games on the schedule, Poth won’t have a lot of time to get into the flow of things. King is happy with the teams the Pirates will face in non-district, though, and feels they will help prepare his guys for the long district season.
On the board to start things off once again are the teams from Marion, Falls City, and Cole. King said the teams will all be physical, and said Falls City and Cole put a lot of speed on the field.
“They should all be good games for us,” King said. “We only have three to get us where we need to be, so we will have to get things done right away.”
Perhaps the Pirates’ greatest strength this season lies in the fact that the players are all quite familiar with the system. There are no coaching changes and no major changes in philosophy. The kids know what to do, and what is expected of them.
The downside is that Poth will be a bit smaller this year. King said it is obviously a concern at some level, but that he has confidence in his team and its abilities. They may not have the size they enjoyed in the past, but he has a roster full of great athletes, and they have a true passion for the game. Still, there are some tradeoffs with the lack of size.
“We better be quick and fast,” he said with a chuckle. “We need to play hard and get after it. If we do that, we will be all right.”
King said the team’s goals are to improve every week, and to understand that championships aren’t won on the first week of the year. His team needs to keep pushing forward, and to be careful not to take any steps back. The Pirates are going to treat the non-district schedule as the first phase of their season, and will then transition into district play with the goal of winning a title and putting them into position for a good run in the playoffs.
The Poth Pirates open their 2013 season at home against Marion on Friday, Aug. 30. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Jack Lane Stadium.
