2013 Fall Sports Preview: New coach to guide Lady Mustangs into tough district

NIXON -- When it comes to volleyball at Nixon-Smiley, there are big changes for the 2013 season.

Longtime Coach Jane Iams leaves the Lady Mustang volleyball program this year, after accepting the position of principal at Nixon-Smiley Middle School. Iams led her teams into the playoffs many times, and always worked hard to be competitive in one of the toughest districts in the region.

Taking over this year is Coach Kim Payne. Payne comes to Nixon-Smiley by way of Gonzales, where she served as head coach for four years. Payne was instrumental in getting the Lady Apaches back into the playoffs after a four-year drought, but had a disappointing season in 2012.

The Lady Mustangs return half of their 2012 team this year, including seniors Alena Alvarez, Savannah Martinez, and libero Jordan Newman. Also back are Megan Guerra, Miranda Carrillo, and Megan Stone.

The Lady Mustangs will undoubtedly have a different look on the floor this year, but what won’t be different is the extremely tough district in which they must compete.

District 28-2A looks the same this year, and Nixon-Smiley must contend with several state powerhouse programs. Right at the top of the list is Schulenburg. The Lady Shorthorns advanced to the state tournament last year and as of press time, sat atop the state rankings as the No. 1 Class 2A team. Right behind Schulenburg is Poth. The Pirettes have a plethora of state appearances and titles, and are hungry to get back on top of the district and region. Hallettsville only fell one match behind Poth last season, and could once again compete for the district crown. Throw Karnes City, Stockdale, and Luling into the mix, and it’s clear the Lady Mustangs will have their work cut out for them.

Payne and her Lady Mustangs won’t have much time to get things together though. They have a full district schedule that starts Friday, Sept. 13, and they need to make their necessary adjustments as soon as possible.

The Lady Mustangs were scheduled to be at Randolph earlier this week, and will travel over to Pleasanton this weekend to compete in the Lady Eagles’ tournament. A match at home against Cuero will be Nixon-Smiley’s final non-district event, before enjoying a few “open” dates in advance of the district schedule.

Nixon-Smiley will travel to Poth Friday, Sept. 13, and then to Stockdale on Friday, Sept. 20. The girls will play through the end of October, wrapping up their regular season at Schulenburg on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
