LA VERNIA -- The Lady Bear volleyball program has been wildly successful under the watch of Head Coach Theresa Reyes, and with half the team back this season, La Vernia is once again poised to challenge for the district title and a run toward the state tournament.

The Lady Bears of 2012 finished the season with an overall record of 35-7, while making a 9-1 run through district play. La Vernia advanced to the regional quarterfinal round of playoffs, and eventually fell to a team that reached the state finals. No shame in that.

Four seniors were big for La Vernia as juniors last season, and Reyes expects big play from them again this season. Brooke Haliscak, Sara Hill, Kasey Rienen, and Morgan Mikes have the experience and the skills to lead their team, and also have the desire to win.

“They have been there,” Reyes said of her returning starters. “The have to be the playmakers and to help the younger players develop.”

While the team is likely to struggle with some communication early, Reyes acknowledged that “learning to click” is a struggle every team faces early in the season. She said this group is very positive and supportive of each other, though, and happily pointed out that the group also has some height it hasn’t enjoyed in recent years.

Reyes said to help her team settle into place, she needs to spend time working hard “as a coach,” by giving her players the necessary reps to learn their positions. The team will also make some adjustments offensively and defensively, as they do every year, as Reyes looks to match up her players with her game plan.

When the district season finally rolls around, it is likely to once again be La Vernia and Somerset competing for the crown. The two teams split games last year, though the Lady Bears grabbed the title. The Bulldogs will undoubtedly look to dethrone La Vernia, and Reyes expects the battles to be difficult. Pleasanton was just a game behind Somerset, too, and the Lady Eagles should be tough again this season.

When it comes to goals, Reyes said that winning the district and eventually state is always the end goal, but that there are several smaller goals along the way.

“We need to just take it one match at a time, and improve with every match,” Reyes said. “We also need to get better at working together and be sure not to peak too early.

“We want to be successful, but I want them to get more out of it than just volleyball,” she added. “It’s also about building relationships.”

The Lady Bears are already in full swing, but still have time to figure things out before district play. La Vernia will participate in a number of tournaments and non-district matches before facing Somerset on Friday, Sept. 27, in the first of 10 district matches.
