2013 Fall Sports Preview: Jaguars begin new chapter with new coach

FLORESVILLE -- Coaching turnover is inevitable, but the Jaguar volleyball program has seen more than its fair share in recent years. The Jags have a new leader this year, but many are hoping she stays in Floresville a while, and brings to town the same level of success she found at previous schools.
Coach Starla Jones comes to Floresville from Wink, a 1A school in West Texas. She spent four years at Wink, during which time she took her team to the state tournament -- twice. Her Wildcats lost in the state finals in 2010, and fell in the state semifinals last year to eventual state champs, Jewett-Leon. The recipe for success is clearly there.
The move to South Texas wasn’t new for Jones, though, as she has coached in the area before. She said she is glad to be back in the area, and is excited to be coaching at Floresville.
In the early stages of two-a-days, Jones said things were going well, and that she was already seeing how talented and hard-working many of the girls are. As for returning varsity members, Jones said she was keeping an open mind going into the workouts, but when the dust settled out, nine members from last year’s varsity squad were back in uniform.
Seniors Jewel Jimenez, Jade Jimenez, Jenevie Guerrero, and JoLynn Castro help anchor the team, while juniors returning to the squad include Micheala Sifuentes, Sarina Thompson, Alexis Mandigo, and Vanessa Rodriguez. Sophomore Kristyn Coldewey is also back.
As for team goals, Jones hadn’t really set any early. She said she would let the girls set their own goals.
“They come up with what they want to accomplish,” she said. “They have more ownership that way.”
As for team strengths, Jones said her team has good quickness and agility, and that there are several good hitters on the floor. The girls are also making good effort in getting to the ball.
On the other hand, she said they still need to get used to each other, and improve their communication.
“But that is an issue every team works with at the start of the season,” she added.
Jones felt the girls needed to work on their confidence, but that is something Jones believes will come in time. Meanwhile, she said she tries to be supportive and encouraging, oftentimes trying to be a cheerleader as much as a coach. She tries to stay positive and encourages the girls to do the same.
The Jaguars finished last year with a 26-18 record, but went unbeaten through district to grab the 29-4A title. The team picked up bi-district and area playoff wins before falling to Corpus Christi Flour Bluff in regional play.
Floresville will continue its non-district schedule into September, and will begin District 29-4A competition on Friday, Sept. 13, as the Jaguars host Kennedy.
