FLORESVILLE -- The tide began to turn in Floresville last year, and Head Coach Jeff Luna hopes to keep the momentum going in 2013 as his Tiger football team fights to stay atop District 29-4A.

Floresville had a solid showing in 2012, finishing in a tie for the district championship. The Tigers were 6-1 in district play and finished the year at 8-3. Floresville lost to Port Lavaca Calhoun in the first round of playoffs, though, continuing a streak the Tigers would rather not be on.

“Our first goal is to win the district, and our second goal is to win that first playoff game,” Luna said. “That’s not been done in a while.”

To get there, though, the Tigers will have a long and difficult road ahead. While several key players from last year’s roster have returned, one large hole this season is at the quarterback position. The job was wide open to start the year, and several players were competing for the starting role. Regardless of who wins the quarterback job, though, they will have no varsity experience when they step into that first game.

Luna has confidence in the guys competing for the job, and said that they will not only be able to throw the ball, but will be a running threat, as well. The Tigers were a run-heavy team in 2012, but Luna and his staff are looking to be a bit more balanced this year. The run is still a big part of the Tigers’ game, though, and Luna wants to remain as a ball-control offense.

Defensively, the Tigers will look pretty similar to where they were last year. Luna said his guys are improving at getting to the football quickly, and then being “physical once they get there.”

Luna credits his players for working hard during the offseason and again this summer. He said the strength and conditioning program had more participants than ever before, and he knows that will transition to success on the field.

The Tigers will be tested early as they play Highlands, Brackenridge, and Lanier in non-district competition. The Tigers will then open up the district with McCollum. Floresville finished in a tie with Medina Valley for the district title last year, but the Panthers have a new coach this year and may be a bit of a question mark. Luna believes Harlandale will be tough and compete for the title this year, and he expects Uvalde to be much-improved.

To win the district title, Floresville needs excellent consistent play from its leaders. On defense, the Tigers return seven starters and Luna said the guys to watch are Kyle Bippert, Sam Handowski, Nick Wilkerson, Gilbert Ortiz, and Vernon Marsh. On offense, P.J. Quinters, Luke Clements, Aaron Laskowski, and Mark Livesay should help move the team downfield.

Luna feels his team turned a corner last year, and he is looking to improve on that this year.

“We have to keep getting better each day,” he said. “We have to be better today than we were yesterday. That, and we need to peak at week 10, not one or two.”

The Tigers begin their 2013 season this Friday, Aug. 30, as they welcome the Highlands Owls. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Eschenburg Field.
