EAST CENTRAL -- It’s usually the coach that stays the same and the players that change from year to year, but at East Central, that just isn’t the case with this year’s volleyball team.

With the departure of Coach Robyn Wunderlich, former assistant coach Todd Dorgan takes over at East Central. He isn’t just picking up Wunderlich’s program, though; he has implemented changes where he sees fit, and is making the program his own. Change is clear.

As for the players, though, they are pretty much the same. The Hornets had as many as four or five sophomores on the floor at any given time last year, and they are back this year and hungry for more. Throw in a mix of last year’s juniors, and a few talented players who were just freshmen during the 2012 season, and you basically have an older, more mature version of the Hornets from last year.

Among the changes Dorgan has made this year are some of the team’s blocking schemes. He felt they had to keep things a bit more simple last year, because of the team’s youth, but he knows they can expand on things this year. Dorgan said his team was learning how to compete last year, and now they need to work on learning how to win.

Dorgan believes his team is hungry for some wins after finishing last year at 15-28, while going 4-6 in district play. He believes a big part of that was in the team’s mental approach to the game, but he sees more confidence this year. He said his team’s defense is improved, and will be one of the Hornets’ greatest strengths this season.

There is still plenty of work to be done, though, and offensively Dorgan has seen his players struggle on their footwork. They have to make improvements and find ways to get the points, and beating the opponents’ blocks is a big part of that.

“If we can’t beat a single block, how are we going to beat a double block?” he asked.

When it comes to goals for the season, Dorgan said he will have his girls define some of their objectives, but he has several for them. He expects them to develop relationships with each other, graduate in the top 25 percent of their class, add value to the community, and win championships.

In order to make that fourth goal a reality, the Hornets are going to have to get past several tough schools in the district. Corpus Christi Carroll and Steele are once again seen as the teams to beat, but Dorgan said South San and Southwest are “on the rise.” Corpus Christi King was also a young team last year, and it will be interesting to see how they factor into the mix.

“We are excited and looking forward to a good year,” Dorgan said. “I hope we impress the fans to the point that they want to come watch us again. Fans like to watch teams that work together.”

The Hornets began their season Aug. 13 with a pair of wins, and the team has been rolling along nicely ever since. East Central will continue its non-district schedule well into September, and will begin District 28-5A competition on Friday, Sept. 27, as the team hosts Corpus Christi Carroll. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
