2013 Fall Sports Preview: Fall tennis season keeps focus on teams
Floresville tennis players wait their turn during a two-on-two drill.
The fall season is all about the team when it comes to high school tennis. Wins and losses are measured by a school’s overall success, rather than by the success of each individual. At Floresville and East Central, the tennis teams are currently in full swing, as they build momentum and prepare to challenge for their respective district titles.
Floresville Head Coach Mario Martinez led his team to a district championship last season, but he admits the Tigers and Jaguars have their work cut out for them this season. Graduation caught up to the team in the spring, and a total of 10 players were lost. The team is young, but Martinez said they have talent, and are working hard to get better every day.
Uvalde is still going to be the team to beat in district play, but last year showed it could be done. Martinez said many of the other schools in the district are still developing their programs, but that he expects they will all show improvement this season.
Martinez believes that in order for his team to repeat as district champions, his athletes must work on three key elements. He said they need to work hard at improving their skill level, their conditioning aspect, and their mental toughness.
“These things are key for any good tennis player,” he said.
Martinez said he is expecting big things from his Tiger seniors this season, as Adrian Rico, Julian Gonzales, and Vincent Villarreal anchor the guys. With only one senior on the girls side, pressure will fall to some of the younger players to carry the load. Martinez said he expects to see big things from juniors Kaia Carrillo and Ashlee Aicher, and from sophomore Marissa Lyssy.
“They all gotta work hard,” Martinez said.
At East Central, Coach Michael Lopez continues as the Hornet head coach. Lopez was not available for comment and no roster was provided, but all of the tennis athletes at East Central are undoubtedly hard at work to represent their school with pride. Good luck, Hornets!
