FLORESVILLE -- The search for an executive director of the Floresville Economic Development Corp. (FEDC) is down to two finalists. Both candidates were interviewed during a closed-session meeting of the FEDC’s personnel committee Aug. 27.

The finalists are former Belton Economic Development Corp. Executive Director Tommy Baker and former Beeville City Manager Tom Ginter.

According to articles in the Temple Daily Telegram, Baker resigned from Belton in August 2011 after the corporation’s board placed him on leave. In exchange for his resignation, he was given six months’ salary totaling $43,372.

As for Ginter, according to a March 28, 2012, article in the Beeville Bee-Picayune, he was terminated unanimously after two years of employment by the Beeville City Council. Ginter had come under fire for a city staff approval of a recreational-vehicle park near some one-family residences and because of low morale within the city’s police department.

Mary Helen Tieken, who chairs the FEDC board’s personnel committee, said that a final selection has not been made. Tieken, along with fellow committee members Andy Eubanks, Mike Herry, and David Strozier, should have a recommendation for the entire seven-member board within the next few weeks.

“We’re not going through this blind,” she said. “We have been very careful.”

Tieken said the FEDC is committed to finding the right candidate who is both qualified for the position and a good fit for Floresville.

“I’m encouraged,” she said. “I’m very encouraged.”

The successful candidate will replace former FEDC Executive Director Jesse Perez, who in January resigned to take a similar position in Hondo. Since Perez’s departure, former Floresville Mayor Raymond “Ram” Ramirez has served as the FEDC’s interim executive director. Ramirez said he was among approximately 18 people who applied for the opening.

Wow - this is very sad and very scary. Remember what happened at FISD - they were warned about Dr. Hunk too, but hired him anyway. There has to be people more qualified than these two finalists.

Well the red flags are certainly there. It will be up to FEDC to figure out what they mean and if there are mitigating circumstances. Be very careful. Mistakes are costly as was proved by the previous exec dir. Caution is ... More ›
