Tigers fall to Owls in season’s first outing
Floresville’s offense lines up during the Tigers’ narrow Aug. 30 loss to Highlands.
FLORESVILLE -- There is always a great deal of excitement surrounding the first game of the season, and that was certainly true of things in Floresville. The Tigers took the early lead against the visiting Highlands Owls, but eventually fell by the final score of 17-14.
After a scoreless first quarter, Floresville broke the stalemate with a 4-yard touchdown run from Gilbert Ortiz. Aaron Balles then booted the extra point for the Tigers, and the season was officially off to a good start, as Floresville led 7-0.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, Highlands immediately responded to the touchdown with one of its own, as the Owls went to the air and scored on a 40-yard passing play. The point-after kick was good, and things were quickly tied on Eschenburg Field at 7-all.
The score held through halftime, and the Tigers came out ready to play in the third quarter. Floresville moved the ball into Highlands territory and then sophomore quarterback Koby Wilkerson connected with Zach Frantz for 35 yards and the score. Balles remained true kicking the ball, and Floresville enjoyed a 14-7 advantage.
The lead for Floresville lasted throughout the third quarter and midway through the fourth, but eventually went away as Highlands scored on a 5-yard run into the end zone. The point-after kick tied things at 14-14, and time was thin for both teams to make something happen.
The Tigers were unable to score throughout the remainder of the fourth, but the Owls drove down into Tiger territory as the final minutes ticked off the clock. With no time remaining in the game, Highlands’ Americo Ayala kicked a 32-yard field goal, giving the Owls a 17-14 win over the Tigers.
Wilkerson completed 4 of 16 passes for 69 yards, and Mason Ray was 1 of 9 for 5 yards. Frantz was the Tigers’ leading receiver with 35 yards and the touchdown, while Brandon Mutz caught a pass for 23 yards. Troy Hughey had two grabs for 11 yards, and Preston Taggs caught a pass for 5 more. Ortiz was the Tigers’ leading rusher with 68 yards on 16 carries. Kyle Bippert picked up 8 yards on four carries, and Taggs had 2 yards on his one carry of the night.
The Tigers will be on the road this Friday, as they travel to San Antonio to face the Brackenridge Eagles. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
