(San Antonio, TX) - CPS Energy’s 420-megawatt Deely 1 power plant experienced an explosion shortly before 11 a.m. CPS Energy officials quickly worked to evacuate the building and ensure all employees were accounted for and safe.

An initial investigation shows the cascade building -- a part that feeds coal into silos before it’s moved into the plant -- was damaged. The plant’s fire suppression system deployed, working as the safety system should. The plant was online at the time of the explosion, and operators are in the process of taking the plant offline for safety reasons and to investigate further.

Coal is fed into the cascade building by conveyors that move the commodity from coal piles. It is several steps removed from the point at which the coal is burned to make steam and turn a turbine to generate energy. Deely Power Plant is located at a 7,500-acre power station in southeast Bexar County that is owned and operated by the energy company.

CPS Energy is the nation’s largest municipally owned natural gas and electric company, providing service to 741,000 electric and 331,000 natural gas customers in the Greater San Antonio area. The company offers the lowest rates among the top 10 largest U.S. cities, while ranking number one in wind-energy capacity among municipally owned energy systems and number one in Texas for solar generation.
