CPS: Deely Power Plant Offline Following Silo Explosion

(San Antonio, TX) - CPS Energy’s 420-megawatt Deely 1 power plant experienced an explosion shortly before 11 a.m. CPS Energy officials quickly worked to evacuate the building and ensure all employees were accounted for and safe.

An initial investigation shows the cascade building -- a part that feeds coal into silos before it’s moved into the plant -- was damaged. The plant’s fire suppression system deployed, working as the safety system should. The plant was online at the time of the explosion, and operators are in the process of taking the plant offline for safety reasons and to investigate further.

Coal is fed into the cascade building by conveyors that move the commodity from coal piles. It is several steps removed from the point at which the coal is burned to make steam and turn a turbine to generate energy. Deely Power Plant is located at a 7,500-acre power station in southeast Bexar County that is owned and operated by the energy company.

Too bad 4th back yard was not close to this....she wanted EPA rules to be relaxed or done away with.
