Editor,

Re: “Education group supports library,” Sept. 4

Since organizations that will benefit from the bond election are starting to support the bond initiative, let me be one of the first to write against supporting the $8.5 million Wilson County bond. County Judge Quinney has stated there were rumors about the bond that were not true, but failed to give any reasons why this much money is needed. The county was going to issue the bonds and we all were going to pay for them even if the county did not provide proper planning, justify all the items, or develop designs with real costs. Thankfully, a petition by the people is forcing a vote by the people. Even after being forced to vote on it, Judge Quinney refused to break out the bond by facility and cost.

I hope the readers remember this funding requirement all started because of structural deficiencies in the courthouse, which would cost $2 million to correct the foundation and the exterior. So, Judge Quinney and the gang have taken a $2 million problem and made a $9.2 million (the latest “preliminary” estimate ... TBD) solution. So, what does this 27-year DPS trooper want to spend the rest of the money on? He wants an unnecessary $4 million Justice Center, which will likely be named after him. He is getting near retirement and what better way to go out than to build a monument to yourself.

If the bond is approved, I think the additional $385,000 parking lot, not included in the $4 million for the Justice Center, should be named after him and not the Justice Center itself.

I urge my fellow voters to get the word out about this ridiculous expenditure of taxpayer money. Vote “no” on this bond and let the commissioners justify why they need all these buildings and then let the people vote on the facilities item by item.

WINSTON J. SHAFFER II

Airborne, you don't have to be a lawyer to be a county judge. Out of all the counties in Texas, less than 2% are lawyers. The job doesn't need a lawyer, it is an elected position, anyone can run. Visiting judges happen everywhere ... More ›

You think the judge would have learned from watching the mayor of Floresville and the former mayor of Floresville both self destruct.
